2025-2026 TAFT ISD STUDENT DRESS CODE
The district’s dress code teaches grooming and hygiene, prevents disruption, minimizes safety hazards, and maintains a positive learning climate. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:
Student appearance should be neat, clean, and appropriate for an educational environment.
Jr High and Elementary students shall not have facial hair. Sideburns should be kept trimmed and remain above the earlobe. High school students with facial hair should be neatly groomed and trimmed.
Eyebrows may not be partially shaven or have designs.
Hair shall be kept neat, clean, well-groomed, and out of eyes. Extreme hair styles such as Mohawks or hair coloring that may cause distractions, are not permitted. The CROWN Act (Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair) prohibiting race-based hair discrimination will be in place.
All shirts/dresses must have sleeves. Shoulders or undergarments should not be exposed.
Articles of clothing or other accessories shall not be worn or used to advertise, promote, or be associated with sex, violence, alcohol, drugs, death, hate slogans, gang activities or inappropriate pictures.
Shirts/blouses may remain untucked and must always cover the torso. Midriffs should not be exposed.
Appropriate closed-toe shoes must always be worn. Steel toe shoes, cleats, taps, or wheels are not allowed. For safety reasons, students must wear tennis shoes for physical education (PE) and recess.
Pants must be worn at the waist. No baggy or sagging pants will be allowed.
Earrings are allowed to be worn on the earlobes. Extracurricular participants may have stricter guidelines due to safety.
No headwear (i.e. caps, hats, and hoodies) should be worn indoors at any time. Items will be taken up and returned at the end of the day. Repeated offenses may result in confiscation until the end of the semester.
Sunglasses may not be worn indoors.
Mouth grills may not be worn on any campus.
Inappropriate tattoos must be covered at school and school-sanctioned activities.
Body ornamentations, other than ear piercings and nose studs, are not allowed. Nose rings, tongue rings, gauges/plugs/tapers/spacers, or other body piercings (other than ear piercings) are NOT allowed. Using any type of covering over body ornamentation is not allowed.
House shoes, pajamas, and blankets are not appropriate attire and are not permitted at school.
Fitted, tapered leggings are not permitted as a substitute for pants or other bottom garments.
Jeans with holes or rips must not reveal skin above the knee. Holes covered with tape or other temporary means are not acceptable.
Shorts, dresses and skirts must be an appropriate length for both male and female students.
Student dress code guidelines apply to school sanctioned activities.
The discretion of the principal or his/her designee will prevail.
If an administrator determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to In-School Suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeat offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
The principal, in cooperation with the sponsor, coach, or other person in charge of an extracurricular activity, may regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in the activity. Students who violate those standards may be removed or excluded from the activity for a period determined by the principal, sponsor, or coach and may be subject to other disciplinary action.
