Attention Taft ISD Community

In keeping with Taft ISD’s practices for responses to COVID-19, we are notifying all faculty, student families,
and the community that we have had three additional cases, a Woodroe Petty Elementary staff member, a Taft
Junior High staff member, and one Taft High School student were test-confirmed to have COVID-19. Our
Woodroe Petty Elementary staff member was last present on campus on Wednesday, November 11, 2020. We
were made aware of our staff test-confirmed case on November 17, 2020. Our Taft Junior High staff member
was last present on campus on Saturday, November 14, 2020. We were made aware of this staff test-confirmed
case on November 17, 2020. Our high school student was last present on campus and attended athletic practice
on Monday, November 16, 2020. We were made aware of the student test-confirmed case on November 17,
2020. Due to federal privacy requirements, we cannot release the name of the individuals or details that may
identify him or her.

In an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of our staff, students, and families, Taft ISD has decided to
close all campuses for On-Campus Instruction and provide Remote Instruction through Friday, November 20,
2020. The safety of our staff, students, and families is a priority for Taft ISD and, given the rise in positive
cases in our county, our decision to close is to protect both students and staff from further exposure and risk.
On-Campus Instruction will resume after Thanksgiving Break on Monday, November 30, 2020. Students must
continue to participate daily with Remote Instruction. Please be sure to connect with the teacher(s) for
engagement and instruction; remote attendance is still taken daily. At this time, extra-curricular activities may
continue and are required to follow COVID protocols. The athletic department will communicate practice times
accordingly. We will notify staff and parents if anything changes that affects pending athletic or other extracurricular events.
Taft ISD has taken extra precautionary measures to disinfect all three campuses over the course of three days
from November 12 - 14, 2020. We have daily sanitizing measures in place. Sanitizer is available in every
classroom. We will be disinfecting all three campuses over the Thanksgiving break again. Taft ISD has
provided updated COVID-19 information on our website,, under the Community tab. Please
review Taft ISD Updates for COVID-19 Response Protocols.

We are working closely with the local health department in this matter. We have notified those staff members
and parents of students who were possibly in “close contact” with the affected staff and student so that
precautionary measures, including individual quarantine, take place. Please be advised that “close contact,”
according to the latest CDC Guidelines is defined as follows: less than 6ft apart for “cumulative total of 15
minutes or more over a 24 hr. period.” Factors may affect this determination (masking, proximity, duration,
whether person had symptoms; ventilation; or whether the person was exposed to infectious secretions at same
time the infected individual was infectious.
We ask that you monitor for symptoms of COVID-19. Any of the following symptoms indicate a possible
COVID-19 infection:
  • Temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher;
  • Sore throat;
  • New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (or, for students with a chronic
    allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline);
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain; or
  • New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever.
If any member of the Taft ISD Community does begin experiencing any of these symptoms in a way that is
not typical, we encourage you to contact your physician. We encourage anyone in the Taft ISD community
staff or student who is lab-confirmed to have COVID-19 to please notify your campus administrator/principal
