Mr. Joe Lopez joined Taft ISD in May 2015 as the Superintendent of Schools.  Under his instructional leadership, Taft ISD has made academic gains and continues to meet the needs of all students.


For the past three years, Mr. Lopez has worked collaboratively with the Board and the Community to raise the bar on Goal 2: Taft ISD will prepare all students for post-secondary engagement: college, trade school, military or workforce.  He is doing this by challenging the status quo and working with all staff members to ensure that our students have a career path of their choice.


Mr. Lopez has also implemented the following initiatives and/or programs:

·       Initiated and Implemented the 1st Full Immersion Computer Science Elementary School in Central and South Texas

·         Superintendent’s Advisory Council for Students, Parents, and Staff

·         Ready, Set, Read Literacy Initiative (To provide home libraries for our students)

·         Expanded Destination Imagination Teams to the Secondary Level

·         Implemented Cost-Saving Measures to ensure a Balanced Budget and Monies available for Student Extra-Curricular and Organizational Activities

·         1:1 Technology Initiative at Petty Elementary (Laptops for every student)

·         Established Robotic Teams at all three campuses


Mr. Lopez serves on the following civic organizations:

·         City of Taft Chamber of Commerce Director

·         United Methodist Church Board of Directors

·         Kiwanis Member

Mr. Lopez has 18 years of experience serving as teacher, middle school and high school assistant principal, principal at both the elementary and secondary level, and central office administrator.  During his educational career, he has placed an emphasis on collaboration and communication with students, parents, and staff.  Prior to joining Taft ISD, he served as the Executive Director for State and Federal Programs in Mission CISD where he provided service and guidance to 24 campuses and approximately 15,500 students.   

At each of his leadership positions, he made it a priority to focus on student achievement.  Together with his campus instructional leadership team (CILT) and other staff members, they developed a shared framework of systems to guide every critical decision.  The same collaboration was also established in conjunction with their parents and stakeholders in the community. 

During his time as an elementary principal in Mission CISD, he led his campus to its first ever TEA Exemplary Rating within 10 years and outperformed the more affluent schools in the District and State.  Cantu Elementary, with predominately minority, economically disadvantaged, and at-risk students, also received recognition as a Title I Distinguished Progress School in 2009 and a Title I Distinguished School in 2010.

In September of 2014, Mr. Lopez was one of only 15 Assistant Superintendents and Administrators from across the nation selected to participate in the prestigious year-long Superintendents Leadership Academy (SLA) through the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS).

Mr. Lopez holds a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Houston Baptist University as well as bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Public Management with a minor in English from Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri.   

Mr. Lopez and his wife Michele have four children, two of which attend Taft Public Schools.  Anna and Benjamin attend the Early Learning Academy at Petty Elementary
