Dear Greyhound Family,

ln light of recent events in our country and surrounding areas, I would like to take this opportunity, as your Superintendent

of Schools, to reassure our students, staff, and families that their safety is our top priority.

Governor Greg Abbott recently issued an order to Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath that public school districts

in Texas must have Emergency Plans in place to respond to potential threats to our staff and students. Prior to the beginning

of each school year, Taft lSD has an Emergency Operations Plan Meeting to discuss revisions, modifications or changes

needed for both the District and Campuses Plans. I want you to know that we have our plans in place, however, I have asked

our Taft lSD Police Department to follow up with the Texas School Safety Center for any updates and/or changes that would

benefit our District at this time.

A few days ago, our Region 2 Service Center in Corpus Christi had a meeting with former superintendents and leaders from

around the country who have been through real life emergency situations. One of the individuals present for that meeting

was the Superintendent of Schools for the Newtown Public Schools during the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

I want you to know that we will be taking all the information she shared as we continue to revisit the Emergency Procedures

we currently have in place.

At this time, we are in the process of updating our security and surveillance cameras for both inside and outside of our

school buildings. The proactive steps that we are taking will allow for Police Officers, Central Administration, and Campus

Leadership to effectively monitor all areas of the campus. I have also asked our Campus Leadership to identify any areas of

concern dealing with entry/exit points for their buildings and parking areas. In addition, we are in the process of purchasing

Motorola Two-Way Radios, so that we can have the highest level of communication. As you know, cell phone service in our

area and in our schools can be difficult, however, the new radios will allow for an immediate emergency response.

As we continue to work together to safeguard our schools, I would encourage all staff, parents and students to do the

 • Immediately report any and all suspicious student behavior to campus Administration and the school police officers.

 • All campus visitors must check in with the front office immediately upon arrival.

 • Follow our security procedures at the campus.

Tragically, no community in America is immune from what happened in Florida, however, here in Taft we will do whatever it

takes to protect each other and maintain a safe and orderly environment. I know that together as "One Team, One Taft" we

will continue to provide a safe learning environment.

I want to thank our Emergency Operations Team, our staff, and the Taft ISD Police Department for their diligence and

dedication. Together we must all be vigilant. Thank you for your continued support and please feel free to contact your

Campus Principals if you have any questions. The Central Administration Team is also available for any questions or concerns

that you may have.
